Certification Assistance

Certification Assistance

All teachers employed in the public schools in New York State must hold a valid teaching certificate. The majority of teachers begin their careers with an initial teaching certificate and then during the 5-year life of the initial, they fulfill additional education and experience requirements to progress to the professional teaching certificate. There are also transitional certificates for individuals with non-teaching degrees and experiences that provide an alternate entry point to teaching.

The ITA and NYSUT realize the challenge that gaining your professional certification can be, and wish to be as helpful as we can. Below are the following points of contact that may help you successfully navigate this process.

Regional Certification Coordinator

We have access to a Regional Certification Coordinator through BOCES, whom you can contact by email at certification@ocmboces.org or by phone at 315-433-2628. Loretta Waldron may be able to answer any certification questions.

TEACH Online

TEACH Online has an email and a helpline to ask them directly
